Royal Oeillet images
The carnation — flower of the king, flower of the people. At Versailles it adorned silk buttonholes; during the Revolution, it reddened the barricades. Royal Oeillet reconciles these two lives in a spicy, powdery trail.
The carnation is a paradoxical flower. Under the monarchy, the white carnation symbolised pure love and fidelity — worn in the buttonhole at Versailles balls. During the Revolution, the red carnation became the rallying sign of the royalists. Marie-Antoinette, it is said, concealed one in her bodice to transmit a secret message to her supporters during her captivity at the Conciergerie.
Royal Oeillet captures all these facets. The opening is powdery and floral — old rose with faded accents, vibrant black pepper — like the rice powder on an Ancien Régime dressing table. The heart brings forth clove, the spice that gives the carnation its unmistakable character — that carnal, almost carnivorous sharpness that no other flower possesses. Rose geranium, pink berries and cedar complete an accord of fine spicy complexity. The base of violet leaves and silky sandalwood softens the whole without extinguishing it.
