The flower that turns toward the sun. A fragrance of almond and vanilla, powdery, dreamlike, smelling of childhood, white dresses and summer afternoons. Sweetness made flower.
Heliotrope — from the Greek helios (sun) and tropos (to turn) — is one of perfumery’s most endearing notes. This small mauve flower with its modest clusters exudes a surprisingly complex natural scent: a blend of almond, vanilla and black cherry, with a powdery facet recalling the rice powder of elegant women of old. Nicknamed the “Herb of Love” and a symbol of piety and devotion, it was one of the 19th-century perfumers’ favourite materials.
In 1886, Oriza L. Legrand dedicated an entire eau de parfum to it, originally baptised “Héliotrope Blanc.” The opening pairs heliotrope with violet leaf in a fresh, powdery accord evoking cosmetics of old — rice powder, perfumed talc, porcelain bonbonnières. The heart reveals sweet almond, buttery iris and luminous mimosa, in a bouquet of discreet, refined femininity. The base extends the reverie: the heliotrope grows warmer, more gourmand, enveloped in musks, benzoin and tonka bean, with that hint of rice powder that is the composition’s signature.
