The undergrowth after September rain. Oakmoss, fern, mushroom, damp earth. The Maison’s masterpiece — an earthy, radical, unforgettable chypre — whose formula predates by three years the one that codified the genre.
“Chypre” is the French name for the island of Cyprus, the mythological birthplace of Aphrodite. In perfumery, the chypre family — built on the accord of bergamot, labdanum and oakmoss — was formally codified in 1917. Yet the formula for Chypre-Mousse by Oriza L. Legrand dates from 1914 — three years before this codification — and pushes the concept in a radical direction: that of the deep forest.
Chypre-Mousse is unanimously regarded as the Maison’s masterpiece. The opening is a green, aromatic breath: wild mint, anise-scented fennel and freshly cut green shoots. The heart is the undergrowth itself: raw oakmoss, green galbanum, herbaceous angelica and fern — an earthy accord of striking intensity. The base pushes the audacity further still: vetiver mingles with pine needles and a fresh layer of oakmoss, in an accord of exceptional depth and longevity.
This fragrance was created in 1914 for the dandies — and it continues, more than a century later, to seduce those who prefer the forest to the garden, humus to the bouquet, audacity to convention.
