The scent of freshly cut hay on a summer’s day — universal, immediate, irresistible. This fragrance pays tribute to one of perfumery’s great revolutions: the birth of the fougère family in 1882.
The scent of freshly cut hay is, chemically, that of coumarin — a magical molecule found naturally in tonka bean, sweet clover and trefoil. In 1868, William Henry Perkin synthesised it for the first time. In 1882, it appeared in a signed composition — the first time a synthetic molecule was used in fine perfumery. This founding act gave birth to the fougère family, the most masculine of all olfactory families.
Oriza L. Legrand’s formula, created in 1886 — barely four years after this revolution — is a direct tribute. The opening is lively and sharp: herbaceous angelica, star anise and wild mint form a trio of almost medicinal freshness, like the air above a just-mown meadow. The heart is pastoral: honeyed clover, freshly cut hay, aromatic clary sage — one might be standing in an Île-de-France meadow on a July afternoon. The base of dry hay, white musk, soapwort and ivy lends the composition a crystalline cleanliness that lingers on the skin like a summer memory.
