La Scala in Milan, on the night of a premiere. Velvet-draped boxes, sopranos in the wings, crystal chandeliers. Apothéose rises — white flowers, musk and resins — like a perfumed ovation.
In 1900, at the summit of its glory, the Maison Oriza L. Legrand created Apothéose — a fragrance of triumph, composed of white flowers, oriental resins and luminous musk. This booklet of burning paper is its most theatrical expression.
In the colours of La Scala in Milan — that temple of lyric art where, since 1778, the greatest operas in the repertoire have been performed — this paper was imagined to purify the boxes of sopranos, elegant homes and all places where beauty is cultivated. Each strip burned releases an airy bouquet of white flowers — ylang-ylang, rose, jasmine — carried by a soft, luminous musk, like the fragrance that lingers in the air after an ovation. The effect is delicate, enveloping, almost immaterial — a breath of silent triumph.
One can also slip the strips into drawers and wardrobes, use them as perfumed bookmarks, or write upon the paper letters and poems by candlelight — for a burning paper is also, and perhaps above all, a paper for dreaming.
