Apothéose

Apotheosis, from the Greek apotheosis: elevation to the rank of the gods. In 1900, the Maison Oriza L. Legrand was experiencing precisely that. Its fragrances perfumed the courts of Europe. Its Baccarat crystal flacons adorned the dressing tables of the world’s most elegant women. Its steam-powered factory in Levallois-Perret — the first in France — was a marvel of innovation. And now it won the Grand Prix at the Universal Exhibition in Paris — the supreme consecration. This moment of glory was immortalised in a fragrance: an “Air d’Apogée,” as the Maison calls it.

The opening is fresh and vibrant — bracing eucalyptus, discreet pepper — like a breath of pure air. The heart unfolds a bouquet of white flowers of great luminosity: creamy ylang-ylang and clear rose, airy, almost immaterial. The base of benzoin and musk is of an enveloping softness, like sun-warmed skin — white musk in its purest, gentlest form.
