Created for an Empress. Queen Victoria, “Kaisar-i-Hind” since 1876, spent her winters in the Nice sunshine at a hotel owned by Oriza. This fragrance was composed to recall the splendours of the Orient — its temples, its champaca flowers and its sacred sandalwood.
In 1886, Victoria ruled over a quarter of the globe’s surface. “Empress of India” for a decade, she wintered each year at the Excelsior Regina Palace in Nice — a sumptuous hotel then owned by the Maison Oriza L. Legrand. It was for her that the Maison composed Empire des Indes, a fragrance intended to evoke “the glorious days of the Maharajas” — the pink sandstone palaces of Rajasthan, the garlands of jasmine and champaca, the wisps of nag champa in millennial temples.
The opening is an awakening of the senses: fresh ginger and musk immediately set the scene — spicy and luminous. The heart is the composition’s true treasure: powdery heliotrope — the Maison’s signature note — mingles with nag champa, that champaca flower (Michelia champaca) whose honeyed, creamy scent has perfumed Hindu temples for millennia. Peru balsam adds its balsamic roundness. The base, all Siamese benzoin, tonka bean and opoponax, envelops the trail in a golden, resinous warmth that persists for hours.
