A Time Machine

Founded in 1720 in the heart of royal Paris, Oriza L. Legrand has journeyed through the centuries without ever losing its soul.

From the Courts of Europe to the Universal Exhibitions, from Baccarat bottles to Art Nouveau creations, the House has written one of the most beautiful chapters in the history of French perfumery.

Today, each fragrance is a key.

Each bottle, a passage. Oriza is a time machine — where the past is not merely contemplated, but worn.

At the origins of refinement

The story begins with Jean-Louis Fargeon the Elder, heir to a lineage of apothecaries from Montpellier. In 1720, he founded the Parfumerie Oriza within the Cour du Louvre.

Its name is inspired by Oryza sativa, the precious rice from which he composed his powders of unprecedented finesse. Very soon, his creations captivated the ladies of the Court. They came to him for delicate waters, protective ointments, and creams inspired by the secrets of Ninon de Lenclos.

In an era when perfume was becoming an art of living, Oriza established itself as the signature of French refinement.

Perfumer to the Courts of Europe

In the 19th century, Louis Legrand gave the House its final name and its international momentum.

The sovereigns of Europe adopted his creations. Russia developed a passion for Violettes du Czar. Italy celebrated Héliotrope d’Oriza. Elegant Parisian women swore only by Crème Oriza and its diaphanous powders.

In the salons, in the opera boxes, in the palaces, the name Oriza circulated as a promise of distinction.

Each bottle became a precious object. Each perfume, a sign of belonging. Each sillage, an era reborn.

Audacity and innovation

With Antonin Raynaud, a visionary industrialist, the House entered an era of spectacular expansion.

In Levallois-Perret, a modern factory was born. The workshops came alive, essences were worked with precision, soaps sculpted like works of art. Oriza collaborated with Baccarat to create exceptional bottles.

Always ahead of its time, the House even invented solid perfume — elegant, portable, revolutionary. At the Universal Exhibitions, Oriza received medals and Grand Prix awards.

The world then discovered what Paris already knew: here, perfume is a discipline of excellence.

Art and beauty

During the Belle Époque, Oriza L. Legrand engaged in dialogue with artists.

Mucha, Saccaggi, and Icart imagined posters and presentation boxes in the Art Nouveau spirit.

Mythical creations were born:

  • Jardins d’Armide, sensual and captivating
  • Œillet Louis XV, a tribute to its royal origins
  • Relique d’Amour, as delicate as a precious memory

Oriza became more than a perfumery: an aesthetic signature.

Silence… then rebirth

The 20th century shook up the great Houses. Crises, wars, industrial mutations:

Oriza eventually faded away, leaving behind an exceptional heritage.

It could have disappeared forever.

But some stories refuse to be forgotten.

In 2012, Hugo Lambert and Franck Belaiche rediscovered the archives, the formulas, the bottles, the stories. They chose to bring Oriza L. Legrand back to life with respect, passion, and exacting standards.

Not to recreate the past. But to reactivate the machine.

Oriza today

Each current fragrance is a dialogue between centuries. Some are faithful re-editions of historical creations. Others prolong the spirit of innovation that made the greatness of the House.

Wearing an Oriza L. Legrand perfume is not simply wearing perfume.

It is:

  • reconnecting with an ancestral gesture
  • inscribing one's own story into a three-century lineage
  • choosing a singular elegance, against the current of the ephemeral

Oriza does not follow time. It crosses it. It reveals it. It leads us back to it.
