Jasmine & White Flowers

Ninon’s secret — a heady, almost indecent, honeyed, animalic jasmine that smells of the night, of the boudoir, and of confidences whispered behind a fan.

The secret of an intoxicating night.

The jasmine of Secret Joly is no demure jasmine. It is a jasmine of seduction — indolic, carnal, almost animal — the one Indians call “queen of the night” because it reaches its olfactory peak in darkness. In 1920, amid the effervescence of the Roaring Twenties, Oriza L. Legrand built around this note a fragrance of remarkable audacity, one the Maison itself describes as “wild and sensual, irreverently animalic and overwhelmingly mysterious.”

The name is a secret in itself: that of Ninon de Lenclos (1620–1705), the lettered courtesan of the Grand Siècle whose miraculous beauty scandalised society well into advanced age. She was reputed to possess secret beauty recipes — “pretty secrets” passed down through generations.

The opening is floral and green: hyacinth and ylang-ylang set a scene at once fresh and opulent. The heart is the sanctuary of the night: velvety gardenia, intoxicating tuberose and jasmine sambac — the roundest, most carnal of all jasmines — intertwine in a white bouquet of unabashed sensuality. The base is the whisper that follows: softened civet, Tonkin musk and Peru balsam compose an animalic, balsamic trail that clings to the skin like an intimate memory.
