Port Lympia is the historic heart of Nice — that crescent-shaped old port whose construction began in 1748 on the orders of King Charles Emmanuel III of Sardinia. It is there, between fishing boats and ochre facades, that the city’s pulse has beaten for nearly three centuries. And it is there that Oriza L. Legrand — whose ties to Nice go back to Queen Victoria and the Excelsior Regina Palace — found the inspiration for its most contemporary creation, and the first wholly original composition since the Maison’s renaissance.
Villa Lympia doesn’t smell of monoï or coconut — let us leave that to postcard beaches. It smells of the real sea: salty spray, sun-dried driftwood, warm seaweed deposited on the shore at dusk. The opening is a marine breath: resinous maritime pine and iodine spray. The heart pairs mimosa — the Riviera’s emblematic flower — with rush and sea salt in a luminous, mineral accord. The base of immortelle (that golden flower with its curry-and-honey scent that grows in the rocks facing the open sea) and seaweed absolute lends an immediate, authentic Mediterranean character.
