The Romanov double-headed eagle soars over this sumptuous composition — a Saint Petersburg smoking room draped in golden brocades, where wisps of blond tobacco, smoked tea and birch-tar leather mingle.
The double-headed eagle is the most powerful symbol of Imperial Russia. Emblem of the Romanov dynasty — which reigned for three centuries, from the accession of Michael I in 1613 to the abdication of Nicholas II in 1917 — it adorned the flags, palaces and seals of the Empire. Oriza L. Legrand, the only French perfumer ever appointed Purveyor to the Russian Imperial Court, named this fragrance in homage to that majestic emblem.
The opening is aromatic and smoky: lavender, davana with its liquorous accents and cade oil — that essence extracted from juniper wood that gives Russian leather its distinctive character — compose a trio of assertive virility. The heart pairs geranium with Indonesian patchouli, golden immortelle and cardamom, in a spicy accord of fine complexity. The base of tonka bean, sacred incense, creamy sandalwood and earthy vetiver closes the composition in a smoky, profound warmth.
