Relique d’Amour is arguably the most singular, the most moving and the most celebrated fragrance of the Maison Oriza L. Legrand. It is also one of the oldest perfumes still in production: its original formula dates to 1900, the year it won the Grand Prix at the Universal Exhibition in Paris, consecrating the Maison at the pinnacle of world perfumery.
The abandoned chapel of a Cistercian abbey. The cold stone of damp, mossy walls. The waxed wood of the altar and old carved pews. Linseed oil in the lamps. Incense and myrrh perceptible in the air. But how fresh and spicy the scent of white royal lilies against this backdrop! A shaft of light through the stained glass illuminates these olfactory paradoxes, between quietude and exaltation. A Divine calling.
The opening is a cloister garden at daybreak: green foliage, resinous maritime pine, fresh herbs still damp with dew. The heart is the sanctuary itself: powdery white lily — regal, immaculate — mingles with sacred olibanum, resinous myrrh, crystalline elemi and discreet pepper, while linseed oil and terebinth add that unique waxed-wood facet that is the composition’s signature. The base of soft musks, moss, waxed wood and blond woods is a perfumed silence — the suspended time of a place of contemplation.
