A fragrance created for a Tsar. Violets gathered in Nice for the court of Saint Petersburg. The story of a unique bond between France and Imperial Russia.
In 1862, Oriza L. Legrand received an unprecedented distinction: the title of Purveyor to the Russian Imperial Court — an honour no other French perfumer ever obtained. Violettes du Czar was created for Tsar Alexander II, known as “the Liberator.” The fragrance would later be worn by Nicholas II, Russia’s last Tsar.
The fragrance opens with a fresh, green violet — the violet of Nice, then the most prized in Europe — whose leaves emit a slightly salicylic facet. The heart reveals iris and heliotrope, which envelop the violet in a silky powder. Then comes the base: a supple leather tinged with amber and Tolu balsam, lending the whole an unexpected depth. As a soap, this duality expresses itself with remarkable elegance.
